COPYRIGHT COMPANION FOR WRITERS, the
first of two books released by attorney Tonya M. Evans-Walls in 2007,
was selected as a "Winner" in the "Business:
Law/Reference" category of the esteemed USABookNews National
Best Book Awards of 2007.
COPYRIGHT COMPANION FOR WRITERS is a
comprehensive layperson's guide that addresses copyright creation and
the benefits of copyright registration, why the "mail your
manuscript to yourself" theory of protecting one's copyright
(a/k/a the Poor Man's Copyright) is a MYTH!, the difference between
fair use and public domain, what infringement is and how to avoid it
or assert your own claim, how to obtain permissions to use
copyrighted works in one's own work -- like song lyrics, pictures,
and quotes, how to protect copyright in the digital age, and what
writers need to know about copyright protection in other countries.
TONYA M. EVANS-WALLS, is Visiting
Professor of Law at the Harrisburg
campus of Widener University School of Law and an attorney
specializing in the areas of entertainment law (literary, music and
film), intellectual property (copyright and trademark), estate
planning, and municipal finance. She is also the Chair of the
Pennsylvania Bar Association Sports, Entertainment and Art Law
Committee, and has served as an adjunct professor of copyright,
publishing and licensing at York College of Pennsylvania.
Evans-Walls, who has distinguished herself as an expert in the fields
of literary and intellectual property law, is currently on leave from
her law practice at TME
Law in Philadelphia to teach first year property.
The publishing industry has recognized her as a leader in legal
reference materials for writers and independent publishers. Jim
Barnes, of Independent Publisher Online, had this to say:
"Finally, a book that answers many of the questions and resolves
some of the major misconceptions we hear about copyright every day.
This will save independent authors and publishers a lot of
heartache-and a lot of money!"
Self-Publishing guru Dan Poynter also extolled the book's virtues by
recognizing it as "a well-written, essential guide for those who
are serious about understanding their rights and avoiding the legal
pitfalls of writing and publishing in the twenty-first century."
